Sam recently spent time in Nikolaev. His sole purpose was to get to know a lady he had corresponded with for some time. That friendship failed to materialize but, with Sam’s positive attitude towards life, he was able to create more friendships than he could have possibly imagined or expected. Sam lived in Ukraine for close to three months. He spent time with many people in both Nikolaev and Odessa. Sam’s Nikolaev visit was an experience he will never forget.

This is a great example of how to find a life partner in Ukraine. Over the past ten years, Larisa and I have met with and helped hundreds better understand the process of cross cultural relationships. In Sam’s case, he always thinks positive. He has always searched with an open mind. Sam is the kind of guy we like to help because he is always positive and listens to what we have share. We enjoyed Sam’s Nikolaev visit and the opportunity to help.

Sam’s Nikolaev Visit a Success.

When Sam sent me the following letter, I wrote him back and asked if I could share his letter with my readers. He was more than happy to share his thoughts, experiences and gratitude. He is a nice guy that just wants to find the woman who is searching for him. I have changed his name and few other personal details without editing grammar etc. Sam’s Nikolaev visit was a definite success.

Dear Bill and Larissa,

Thanks so much for your birthday greetings.  I had a lovely day here in Oz and an enjoyable meal in the evening with friends.

Finally I’ve been able to sign paperwork being final property settlement agreement with my Ex – Donna.  As I mentioned previously; my Ex still works in the business with me.  I have already interviewed and found a replacement for Donna whom will start on 9th January.  Donna will spend a week or two training Nancy and then move to Brisbane to commence her new job etc., and be closer to the kids.   To our credit we’ve remained good friends and have a healthy respect for each other.

I must say that I really enjoyed my time in the Ukraine.  What an amazing country and people. I got to meet and make friends with some fantastic folks.   The kindness and care shown by yourself, Larissa and teachers touched me.   Sure the last 6 weeks or so was a little difficult and it tried to put a dampener on things, but overall I don’t regret one thing.

My eye appears to be finally settling down; and the specialist here commented on the outstanding job that Surgeon Galina did on my eye in Odessa.  I’m so grateful for her expertise and help. My new glasses are helping a real lot and finally I’m back at gym and able to get my body back into some shape again.

The end of my time in Nikolaev seemed to catch me unaware, so much so, that I ran out of time to catch up with you guys for a final meal and goodbye and with some other folk as well.

I must say Bill, that I was totally impressed with your school and the teaching program.  English Club is a real blast and was such an important part in me settling into the Ukraine.  My advice to anyone is that it simply takes time and consistency to form new friendships.

After I left the Ukraine I stopped into Oman for a few days to meet Sveta from Moscow. She hastily took vacation leave and paid for her flights etc., to Oman.  We have so much in common and both strongly feel that everything is heading in the right direction.   She’s met my mom and brothers via a Video Call and I will meet her parents this coming weekend via Skype.

She has applied for a visa to Australia and hopes for us to meet on 19th  December; with her returning to Moscow by the 9th  of January.  It hasn’t cost me a cent for any communication and she’s never asked me for anything other than friendship with honesty and open communication from day one.  We both feel we’ve met our best friend in the world and I’ve closed my profile from any dating site. As we say here in Oz, everything is going swimmingly)).

I will attach a few pics here of Sveta and also of our time in Oman. She’s 36 and never been married.  In reality she’s been married to her career and works ridiculously long hours and has to-date seen 86 countries in the world through travel and work.  Sveta is now ready for a sea-change in her life.

My hope Bill is that by the end of January I will own both businesses outright and have a new future with a special lady.

Due to recent changes with my Franchisee (ABC), I won’t be able to come back to the Ukraine for a period of time (i.e. say Christmas next year).   All in all, I’m happy with how thing are progressing and am really look forward to coming back to seeing you and Larissa as soon as possible.

I understand that Kelvin from New Zealand is coming back on 20th  December (subject to getting Visa Approved).  I have ceased communication with our Attorney mate from the US (ie Brendan Walsh) but now have made other great friends via Viber, Facebook and Skype.

Could you please pass on my love and regards to Oksana.

Has Larissa been able to speak to Tanya from English Club about doing English lessons?  Bill, if someone comes into the school that you both feel warrants special consideration for lessons etc., please feel free to discuss with me about some sort of sponsorship in part of full.  I don’t mind if it’s a gentleman or lady.  The “student choice” I leave with you both.

I feel it’s a small way that I can support your school whilst making a difference in someone’s life.   To be honest I can’t speak highly enough of what you do in Nikolaev and I’m privileged that I can join with you both in some way to further the good work.

Bill, I miss our chats and friendship; and I’m glad that you got to meet a normal foreigner for a change)).  Thanks for always having my back and for all your help.

Anyways, I had better finish here.  Once again thanks for everything and I look forward to more adventures with you both.

Yours sincerely,

My reply to Sam,

Hi Sam,

Thank you for your kind words. We are glad to hear you are doing well.
One question.
We are updating the PenPals Nikolaev web site. I would like to use your letter on our site. Would it be okay if I used a portion of your letter and changed your name? I can eliminate all references to you and your location. Your letter was well written and full of thoughts and ideas for any person to learn from.
We are putting more energy into this because I am preparing for the launch of our book next year in 2017. No:) I am not finished yet but, I will make sure you get a copy.
I am updating all of my articles on the PenPals website. Once I have updated every page, I will start adding new articles. Yours will be the first new article.
Thank you Sam.

Our language school was founded in November 2008, one year after my arrival. It all started from the desire to help others and the need for income. There was another reason. With the financial crisis in America, it made little sense to go back to start a new life there. With little effort, we were able to see the opportunities here in Nikolaev. Teaching English seemed like a good idea for a number of reasons. It allowed me to study English while teaching it. For me, this is an important key to writing. More on this in our book to be released in 2017.

Bill and Larisa First Met Ten Years Ago…

Ten days, ten years ago, April 2007. It was an indescribable time for both of us. Sharing every day together was better than a three day pass at Disneyland. Larisa showed me around town and introduced me to her friends. I knew things were getting serious when she agreed to introduce me to her son and parents. Here is a story I wrote a few years ago. It gives an open perspective of our first few days together in Nikolaev. Lots of food and fun.

Peters Red Wine,
Ukraine and a Trip
Through The Countryside…
by Billgreen54

April, 2007, my first journey to Ukraine. A fun and interesting time. Great weather and a firsthand account of Ukrainian culture, complete with smiling faces and many warm, first, hello’s. During my ten day visit, while we made our way around Nikolaev, I was reminded of my hometown. The city where I grew up; just 40 minutes or so, east of San Francisco, California. As I remember it, Richmond, was full of places to shop and live. Houses, old and new, lined the countless quiet streets while thriving businesses took care of customers along the main thoroughfares. That was somewhere between 1953 and 1958.

Fast-forward about 50 years to 2012 in Nikolaev and the similarities are striking. That first visit to Ukraine, took me back a few years and then some. Maybe, that’s why I felt right at home. During that first visit, Larisa and I, traveled to a small village just on the other side of Kherson. It was her village; the village she had grown up in. The wide variety of crops that filled the countryside reminded me of my home just before deciding to travel around the world. That was my first peek at the real Ukraine.

Living near Fresno California from 1996 to 2007 was interesting to say the least. Raising the kids, running a business, taking care of mom and dad were all unforgettable life experiences. The Fresno valley is very similar to much of Ukraine. Endless fields growing everything from grapes to wheat can be seen while traveling the highways. Ukraine is famous for it’s agriculture along with many other industries. It’s a top producer of sunflower and corn oil in this part of the world. The countryside is often filled with oceans of yellow. It’s quite a site to see at the peak of the sunflower growing season.

Meet The Parents…

Our journey from Nikolaev to Larisa’s village took just over two hours. The highways here can be an adventure, but for the most part, they were drivable at reasonable speeds. As we slowed down coming off the highway, we entered Vinogradova. The streets quickly became smaller and unpaved, all in pretty good shape. As we drove past home after home, I was eager to finally meet Larisa’s parents and son. We were bearing gifts for Vlad; all for football. As we pulled up to her parents home, I was struck by the humble surroundings. I couldn’t wait to meet everyone while I could see that Larisa was more than a little nervous. We had just met face to face for the first time just three days before…

Vlad’s new football and shoes came in handy providing a reason to get to know each other. Kicking the ball up and down the dirt street lasted just long enough for things to settle down in the kitchen. Once the table was set and filled with everything from fish to borscht, Vlad and I made our way to the table. It was filled with all kinds of tasty looking dishes. Some recognizable and a few plates filled with adventure. What to eat? Well, not to worry, there was time to enjoy it all. There was just one little tradition to begin the celebration with first. The toast! No, not bread in a toaster. To toast with a little of Peter’s red wine. Peter was famous for his red wine. He was also known for sharing it with others. He had been producing his infamous red wine for years for all to enjoy. It was quite tasty and Peter was more than generous even though we forgot to share with the others. It was more like, the others needed to control the situation rather than join the contest before taking the first bite.

Peters Smile and The Last Drop…

Can you imagine what Peter was thinking? Here was his little girl who brought this guy home from the other side of the planet. What was she thinking? More importantly, what was going through Peters mind? There wasn’t time to ask too many questions. Just a few seconds to pour the first glasses of wine. One for Luda, a little for Vlad, some for Larisa and no room to spare for Peter and I. Glasses sitting on the table and forks in hand, Peter slowly raised his glass, said a few words and gave me a stare with a smile. Not sure what he said but, it was as warm as can be. And with that, Peter continued his stare and smile with glass at the starting line. The next few seconds went by in the blink of an eye. As Peter began to down the wine, so did I. Both staring at each other while savoring the last drop.

Glasses on the table with speechless company to my left and right, Peter brought our glasses to the brim with his tasty home brew. Without a second to lose, We went for our glasses. Once they neared their final approach, down they went. No words. No toast. Just “Over the lips, past the gums, look out stomach, here it comes! Frantically and cautiously together, I grabbed for the nearest something to eat. I hadn’t eaten for some hours. Fish, bread, borscht. everything close enough to grab went down the hatch. With no time to lose, Peter poured another. Thank heavens my prayers were answered, Peter emptied every last drop from that bottle. While the onlookers weren’t amused, they weren’t surprised either. Although I was a guest in their house, they understood Peter explicitly. I understood the power of a Ukrainian woman’s eyes when Peter grabbed the bottle for a refill. One look from Luda and it was clear, we had had enough fun. Welcome to Ukraine!

Just One of The Boys…

Here I am, in the home of a woman I was just getting to really know and all I could think about was competing at the dinner table. Thankfully, Larisa saved the tongue lashing for the trip back home. The only person amused besides me was the driver. I suppose it was our first relationship test. Of course, I apologized for wanting to be one of the boys. We both agreed that future celebrations would be kept to a quiet roar and alcohol consumption would be strictly monitored. Was it a good idea to have too much fun at the home of my sweethearts parents? Lets just say that I am lucky to have an understanding wife and extremely fortunate to be understood…

Larisa is from Ukraine

Larisa is From Ukraine…

Born and raised in Ukraine in a village in the Kherson region, Larisa is an only child but, never alone. Her mother and father raised her to be strong and independent. Her grandparents gave her family and wisdom. Growing up in Ukraine has never been easy but, for many before 1989, life was considered good. Job security, a place to live, land to farm. Life wasn’t so bad. The 90’s was a much different time. More about Larisa in our book to be published in 2017.

Larisa Green Kiev

Larisa started her search by signing up on a dating website in early December 2006 just weeks before we met on the Internet. Thankfully, she agreed to chat with me after my first “Hello”. That was mid December just after my return from Russia. Over the next few months, Larisa and I communicated on a paid dating site daily with few exceptions. We discussed many parts of our lives. The more we wrote to each other, the more we understood there was something special between us. Impossible to explain even today. I just know that whatever force allowed us to find each other was like magic. Looking back at that time, there were many elements that fell into place. To fully understand what we were doing with our long distance friendship wasn’t easy. We just let life guide us knowing everything would be okay.

The First Phone Hello…

It was mid March 2007 when we decided it might be a good time to speak with each other by phone. Just one small problem; we didn’t speak the same language. The good thing was that, language difference didn’t matter. Just listening to the others voice would be a great start to a future relationship. We spoke to each other for the first time by phone with the help of a lady that spoke a little English. It was just enough to help us say hello to each other. Actually, saying hello was the easy part. My “How are you?” and her “Giggle” was enough to seal the deal. I knew I needed to get on a plane and meet Larisa in person.

The First Handshake…

Just weeks later, I made my way to Odessa Ukraine. Larisa was standing in the lobby with a look I will never forget. Can you imagine a Ukrainian woman with the look of fear written all over her face? Ukrainian women are taught from birth to be strong and serious with a twist or two and a special smile… They need to be strong and focused. It’s what Ukrainian society is all about. Well, more about that in our book. I can just tell you that after a quick handshake and a peck on the cheek, Larisa smiled and I followed. We found our way to the taxi parked just outside the entrance. The taxi driver was polite and accommodating.

The First Trip Together…

Larisa and I jumped into the back seat of Vadim’s black sedan and off we went. Interpreter in the front seat and Vadim navigating through traffic. The two hour drive felt about as long as a heartbeat. Larisa and I passed the electronic translator back and forth the entire trip to Nikolaev. The interpreter riding shotgun, hardly spoke two words. She spent most of the trip on her phone. Larisa and I were able to understand each other even though we didn’t speak the same language. In fact, except for that two hour ride, we have never used the services of an interpreter. We just knew that there was something special about our ability to understand each other without language.

Those Beautiful Sad Eyes…

As we drove through Nikolaev, I felt right at home. It was an odd feeling but comfortable. Vadim pulled up to the apartment building where I had rented a one bedroom flat for the next ten days. As we entered the flat, Larisa seemed a little nervous. I paid the interpreter and off she went. I told her that we wouldn’t be needing her services any longer. Larisa sat on the sofa and I made my way to the bathroom. After a quick shave and a splash of cologne, I stepped into the front room to find Larisa looking up at me with beautiful sad eyes. As I walked up to her, she handed over the translator. I sat down beside her and read her translated words.

I Don’t Speak English…

I will never forget those words. It was to be the beginning of something special. While reading Larisa’s message, I realized there was no looking back. Just look into the future and understand that everything will be okay. Her message read “I don’t think this is a good idea, I don’t speak English”. Having just traveled around the globe to meet this special woman, I had just one thought for her. “Life is an adventure, let’s go”. She smiled and we went for a long walk. It has been ten years since we first met. We couldn’t be happier. Our book will be out in 2017. We will share the last ten years of our life. Our hope is to inspire others and to share our life with you.

We hope you find our articles and stories interesting and useful. Our goal is to help others understand that there is a way to improve your odds of finding that special someone.

Bill is from America

Bill is From America…

It was December 2006, just returned to America from Saint Petersburg Russia after a ten day stay. My time there was exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. Meeting an English teacher in Russia was definitely a first for me. Teaching three kid’s English in that big city, was an experience I will never forget.

Six Ladies…

Over those ten days, I had the pleasure of meeting six ladies. Although, they were all interesting, there was no chemistry. A psychologist, a dentist, a skating instructor, a housewife, a baby doctor and an English teacher. Interesting for sure, just no chemistry. My journey back home was uneventful. Just a long trip. A lot to think about for sure. I had no idea that I would make Nikolaev Ukraine my home someday.

Jet lag and the time difference was a real challenge but, after a good nights sleep and self reflection, I continued my search. I knew there was someone searching for me. You know… Two ships passing in the night? I knew that if I stopped searching, it would be impossible for her to find me. I knew she was out there somewhere. My angel was waiting for me. Sounds crazy, right? You wouldn’t think that way if you knew Larisa… She was in fact, waiting for me to offer up the first hello. She didn’t know it was me she was searching for and … well… I had no idea who or where my angel was either. I just knew that I couldn’t give up. Can you imagine she was waiting for me in Nikolaev Ukraine all this time. Without continuing my search, we would have never found each other.

My Journey to Russia…

Before my journey to Russia, I had devised a way to help weed out the good from the not so good. That took me nearly a year. A year of daily communication with ladies all over the Internet. My journey started in early 2006. No, it didn’t start with a Russian dating web site. Quite the opposite was true. It started with the idea of searching for a real woman that would understand me, love me through thick and thin until death do us part… Isn’t that how it is supposed to be? Of course, I would do the same for her. Oh, and don’t forget to toss in that communication thing with a little compromise as well.

First ten do’s and dont’s

Where is Nikolaev Ukraine?…

That takes me back to how all this started. You know… How I ended up living in Nikolaev Ukraine with my angel; The most beautiful woman in the world. It all started soon after New Years 2006. Wanting to start the new year out right, my new years resolution was to lose a little weight, get fit, meet an angel, fall in love and… well you know the rest… I did what most do these days, I signed up on a few dating web sites. E-Harmony, True.com and Match.com. For everyone who has searched for your other half over the Internet, hard work, lot’s of letters and my handsome looks. That was all I needed to get back into the dating scene. Who knows what might happen after that?

The First Meeting… A Must Read!

The Letter from New York…

Just weeks after signing up on all those websites, I received an email from a nice lady in New York. Can you imagine? Me from California and this nice lady from the other side of the country? Her letter was short. Something like “Hello, my name is Natasha, I am from New York, would you like to communicate?” At first glance, the thought of long distance communication, travel, expense and and and, was enough for me to forget about the letter. However, being the adventurous kind of guy that I am, I decided to write her back and say hello. What the heck? What did I have to lose?

No Charm The Third Time…

A day or so later, I received a reply from my new friend in New York. The letter was short and surprising all at the same time. The letter said something like this… “Thank you for writing me. I want to tell you that my best friend helped me write my profile and she made a small mistake. I am not from New York, I am from Russia!” Oh boy? Sounded a little crazy to me. I wrote her back asking for a phone number to help me verify where she was from. A reply was never received. Strange that someone from Russia would send me a letter. Not giving it a second thought. I forgot about the letter and continued writing the other ladies. All from California. I dated two ladies once and one lady three times. No chemistry and few prospects. It was still early 2006 and lady luck was not on my side. I wasn’t in a hurry. I just knew I was tired of being alone.

Lot’s of Pretty Photos…

It was nearly March 2006 when a revelation struck me. Working away at my desk, out of the blue, a thought crossed my mind. What about Russia? At first, I thought the idea of even thinking about a woman on the other side of the planet was just plain crazy. What about travel? Language? Age? Culture? Those and about a million other rational thoughts went through my mind. Without much thought beyond reality, my fingers typed the words “Russian woman” on the keyboard.

Photo’s Photo’s Photo’s…

Sending me to a plethora of Russian dating sites. I thought “Oh my god! What is this?” I had no idea there were so many sites with Russian women. Overwhelming didn’t come close to what was going through my mind. No, it wasn’t the pretty photos that got me excited. It was the sheer numbers of websites and the thousands of profiles. Ukrainians love their numerous holidays and like to “celebrate” those holidays in grandiose fashion. It’s not uncommon for westerners to be surprised at just how many holidays they observe and the amount of fireworks and fun that goes along with them. Ukraine’s history that included Paganism and later Christianity can be attributed to the evolution of many of its current holidays and celebrations.

1 January – New Year’s Day

It is one of the favorite holidays in Ukraine. As in Western countries on Christmas Eve, Ukrainians give “New Year” presents. Children receive their presents under the New Year Tree on the morning of the 1st of January. Traditionally, just prior to midnight there’s a Presidential speech broadcast nationally. When the clock strikes midnight, people pop open their champagne bottles and raise a toast. With the first glass they congratulate each other as the clock strikes 12 times and fireworks fill the sky. The week before the New Year is a busy one with shopping, parties at work, decorating pine and fir-trees, and cooking the most delicious meals. The main folk heroes of this holiday are Father Frost (Did Moroz) and his grand-daughter “Sniguron’ka” (The Snow Girl). The tradition of predicting fortunes on this night is very popular among young people.

Ukrainian Observed Holidays

One tradition includes writing down on a piece of paper your wish for the coming year, then dropping it in to your champagne and drinking it as the clock strikes twelve times. Another “fun” folk tradition practised mainly in the villages on New Years night is for the unmarried girls to go outside and throw one of their boots over the Hosts’ fence. Whichever way the toe of the boot ends up pointing indicates where the future husband will come from. Nearly all businesses remain closed from December 31st to January 8th.

7 January – Orthodox Christmas

The period from the 7th until the 14th of January is Saint Christmas week. During this week people go from one house to another, singing songs and wishing good wishes to health, prosperity, etc. and just having a good time. Most usually are dressed in folksy or carnival type costumes. This is called “Kolyaduvannya” and “Schedruvannya”. The songs are called “kolyadky” and “schedrivky”. When somebody is singing these songs and greeting you, as a rule you should give them sweets or food or drinks or whatever you have as a token of appreciation. It is believed that everything that the people have sung in their Kolyadka and Schedrivka will come true.

Also during the new year holidays, up to the 14th of January it is common for kids (and sometimes adults-in the villages) to go from one house to another wishing the owner of the house new year wishes, new happiness, health, etc. All those wishes are usually said in rhymes and with the spreading of seeds, such as wheat or other grains. This shows a wish of prosperity for the house. This practice is called “Posivannya”. Some token, usually food, drink, sweets, or money, is usually given in return.

8 March – International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is considered the first Spring Holiday in Ukraine. It is an official day off as both men and women look forward to this holiday. It originated as a day of fighting for women’s rights, when on the 8th of March 1897 women (workers of sewing and shoe factories) gathered in New York demanding 10 hour working days, light and dry work places and equal salaries with men. In 1910 at the International Conference of Women Socialists in Copenhagen, Clara Tsetkin proposed celebrating the International Women’s day on March, 8th which sounded an appeal to all women of the world to join in the struggle for equality.

The International Women’s day on March, 8th has been a State Holiday of the Former Soviet Union since the countries inception. Beginning in 1965 it was recognized as an official day off. The holiday enjoyed vast celebratory rituals, including public meetings involving officials at various levels of government in an attempt to report the governments efforts in supporting Women’s Rights and issues concerning them.

Gradually International Women’s day became less political and more personal. After disintegration of the Soviet Union , March, 8th has remained on the list of State Holidays in nearly all of the CIS countries including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia as the “International Women’s Day”. In Uzbekistan it is referred to as the ” Day of Mother”.

In Armenia it is celebrated on April, 7th as the “Day of Motherhood and Beauty”. Currently in the CIS it is also thought of as the “Day of Spring” and the “Day of all Women”, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, wives and girlfriends. Unlike Mother’s Day “every” woman expects to receive flowers and gifts. April – May – Orthodox Easter

Two weeks following the Catholic Easter Holiday is the main Christian Orthodox Holiday established to honor the Resurrection of Jesus Christ following his Crucifixion on the cross and to the coming out of the Jews from Egypt. The date of Easter is usually determined by the Church calendar and calculated according to the so-called “Paskhalias” (the name for the “special tables”.) Before and during Easter Ukrainians buy or bake Easter cakes (biscuits with raisins),and hand paint eggs widely known as Pysanka. It is a very important holiday. On Easter night people go to their local church, spending the entire night in Church services! Usually they take with them Easter cakes, painted eggs, and bottles of wine. In the morning (about 4 am) the service concludes with the clergyman sprinkling all food with sacred water which is believed to give strong healing powers. At this time people return home to continue the celebration with food and drink throughout the the day. The traditional greeting on this day is: “Khrystos Voskres!” (Christ is arisen) and the answer “Voyistynu Voskres!” (Truly arisen) followed with kisses and the exchanging of gifts.

50 days after Easter – Holy Trinity Day (Svyata Troyitsya)(or “Green Sunday”)

This holiday is dedicated to the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection of Christ (Easter). This event gave rise to Christianity. The meaning of the Holy Trinity is thus: God the Father laid the basis for the church in the Old Testament, the Son brought its meaning into words, and the Spirit acts within it. On this holiday people decorate their houses and apartments with Calamus (an herb) and assorted green branches.

This tradition comes from ancient Judaism, in which the Pentecost, the Feast of Harvest, was celebrated outside amongst flourishing Nature. On Holy Trinity Day people go to a cemetery to visit the tombs of relatives and friends who have passed away. In this holiday has emerged the custom of leaving food on the burial tombs of loved ones though no one claims it’s significance or relevance to Christianity.

Traditionally people leave some vodka or other alcohol and something to eat along with it, such as a piece of bread or candy. It is considered a good sign to find that the food and drinks have disappeared upon your next trip to the cemetery! Holy Trinity Day is a very important religious holiday in Ukraine.

1 – 2 May – Labor (May) Day

The 1st of May historically has been the traditional holiday of Spring. During the Industrialization of the Nineteenth Century, it became an International Day of Solidarity for workers of all countries.

The 1st of May began to be widely celebrated with various groups of workers joining together and paying tribute to the memory of victims of oppression and for the rights of all oppressed workers irrespective of their nationality, sex, age and/or profession. In it’s convention of 1888 the “American Federation of Labour” declared, that May the1st should become a day for the active struggle of workers for the eight-hour work day.

Strikes and Demonstrations were held worldwide. Later, in the former Soviet Union, this holiday was widely and actively celebrated with huge parades and political speeches on Red Square in Moscow and in all other cities. All workers of the Soviet Union including university and school students, were obligated to attend the parades, bringing flowers, balloons and posters. Non compliance was met with severe persecution.

Now in many of the CIS countries, including Ukraine, you can still find some political gathering to celebrate May Day. At this time however, this holiday has become a celebration as the day of triumph for “Nature”, from which is a full bloom with birds’ singing, trees budding, and multicolored flowers painting the countryside. In this celebration people look forward to warm weather and the joys of summer.

9 May — Victory Day

This is a holiday of both joy and sorrow. A great tribute is bestowed to those who gave their lives during World War II resulting in today’s peace and happiness. The eternal memory of those lost will last forever throughout the generations. Veterans gather together remembering those who perished. Every city has an area on this holiday in which people gather called “The Eternal Fire”. In Kiev it is located near the famous WWII museum and the “Motherland” Statue and Monument.

28 June – Constitution Day

On this day in 1998 the Constitution of Independent Ukraine was adopted. Fireworks and various concerts and musical events are common throughout the country.

24 August – Independence Day

Independence Day is Ukraine’s largest State holiday, which commemorates the adoption in 1990 of the “Declaration of Sovereignty” of Ukraine. Impressive fireworks displays and noteworthy concerts throughout the capital Kyiv and the rest of the country.

NOTE: If any of the above official holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday, it is customary for the following Monday to be an official public holiday also. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine may also transfer Monday or Friday” work days” to the preceding or following Saturday ONLY if any of the above holidays fall on the corresponding Tuesday or Thursday.

25 January – “Students Day” also “Tatyana’s Day”

Tatyana’s Day is a pleasant and upbeat holiday highlighting the best, brightest, and most carefree years in the life of every student. On this day, all former classmates tend to grow nostalgic, and recall their fellow students, Deans and Principals as well as recalling memorable student years. The holiday’s origin goes far back into history. On the 12th of January according to the Old Calendar (Jan 25 New Calendar) in 1775, being the day of “Maiden Tatyana the Martyr”, Empress Elisabeth Petrovna signed the regulation “Concerning the foundation of Moscow University.” This project was developed by the famous Russian Scientist Mikhail Lomonosov and later continued by Ivan Shuvalov.

Shuvalov chose this day to sign the regulation not by accident. as he desired to present it as a gift to his mother Tatiana Petrovna on her Name Day. “I am giving you a University”, said Shuvalov. On Easter, 1791 the “Church of Tatyana the Martyr” was opened. Later, Nikolay ” I” disposed in his Decree to celebrate, not the opening of the University, but the signing of the regulation regarding its foundation. On this holiday all kinds of distinctions -of age and class, grades and ranks, were cancelled, Rich and poor were equalized – All felt themselves as fellow citizens of the” Scientific Republic ”. On this holiday the kitchen was preparing for the students cold snacks along with vodka, cheap wine, and beer. You could find seated at the table favourite professors, popular journalists, students, lawyers, and administrative figures. Vladimir Giljarovsky, describing Tatyana’s day, truthfully recalls the popularity of a rhyme “”Pyana – Tatyana” which translated means “Drunken Tatyana”. Yes, it was a loose, and at times a disgracefully loose holiday. So, thanks to the love of Mother by an omnipotent favorite of Shuvalov, and the decree of emperor Nikolay “I”, Sacred Martyress Tatyana has turned into a “Patroness” of the students, and the day of her commemoration turned into a reckless revelry. Nowadays, on this winter day we congratulate students of all generations. With feelings of gratitude we recollect the teachers who opened the Temple of Sciences for us. Even though this holiday is considered more of a Russian holiday, students in Ukraine are celebrating it also as a youth holiday, for all of those who keep the fire of creativity in their souls, with a thirst for knowledge, search and discovery.

6 June – Ivan Kupala Day

Ivan Kupala Day is one of the great and enigmatic holidays signifying a celebration in honour of the “God of the Sun” (or “Dazhbog”). It is believed that during this time of summer solstice, the sun is strongest, before turning to the winter. They say that the Sun is a personification of light, celebrating its victory over dark forces, so as it rises it’s “playing”, “leaping” and feeling joyful. All Nature is also joyful because of this, becoming special and charmed. Ukrainian observed holidays are a time for celebration. The name of the holiday is bound to the name of “Kupajla”, who is the “Divinity of Fertility”,of the harvest, welfare and medicinal healing herbs and plants. Ukrainian observed holidays are all about traditions. Traditional ceremonies are timed so as to celebrate in honor of youth, beauty, love and purification.

On the 6th of July people set off for the gathering of medical herbs and plants. On Ukrainian observed holidays they also gather healing herbs at dawn, far from the settlements and paths, all in a good mood and praying. Folklore has it that besides medical properties Kupal’s’ki plants have a considerable magical effect. The main Kupal’s’ki ceremonies were taking place at night 6 – 7 July. Kupala night is a special night.

Not only is it the most mysterious and enigmatic but also the most dissolute night of the year. The people believed that all Kupala’s articles like chaplets, sprigs of sapling, ash, dew and other items had had not only healing properties but also considerable guarding forces from impure spirits as well as witches, which were thought to be very active on Kupala’s night. Ukrainian observed holidays are always full of tradition. All night long people keep Kupala bonfires burning, leaping over the flames, cleansing themselves of ill and bad luck. Families get together on Ukrainian observed holidays.

The remnants of the bonfire are distributed to the participants, and maybe taken home, to protect against evil forces. It was considered a good sign for their future if young people, while jumping over the fire, would keep their hands locked and their clothes un-scorched . Mothers burn shirts of ill children in the Kupala fire as illnesses are believed to burn away with it.

The next ceremony consists of purifying by another element. Water. Girls try to dive in the water in such a way, that a chaplet from their hair would float on the surface of the water. Ukrainian observed holidays is for family. Sometimes girls were sending their own personal chaplet with candles lit floating to the other side of the river or lake as the young men would try to capture the chaplet of his favorite girl. If not able to reach it from shore, some would impatiently jump in the water and retrieve the girls chaplet. A kiss awaits the bearer of each chaplet.

Especially enigmatic were recitals relating to fern blossoms on Kupala night. In order to see it, you have to go at night to the fern bush to spread under it a linen or towel on which the Easter cake was sanctified. Next you must draw around yourself a circle with the knife sanctified in the Church, sprinkle the plant with sanctified water and read a prayer. Impure forces then try to drive away and scare the man IE; wind, noise, blowing small rocks and twigs. It will not, however, be able to overcome the outlined circle. This is why you need to “fear not”. Having fun at Ukrainian observed holidays is tradition for the family.

At midnight the fern begins to bloom and fall on the linen. This is when you need to quickly rap the linen and hide it with the fern blossoms in your bosom. Such bravery rewards the person who did this to inherit the power to see how trees walk from one place to another. Families get together on Ukrainian observed holidays. To understand the language of birds, animals, plants and trees. He will be able to locate treasure hidden in the ground and retrieve it.

The highlight of the ritual is a decoration of the sacral sapling – “kupaily” (kupailytsi, gil’tsya, madder). Usually it is the branch of a willow, cherry or ash tree, decorated by field flowers, paper ribbons, and burning candles. Girls dance and sing about love and marriage around the “Kupaily”. It is then dipped in water and broken into pieces and given to the girls, “so they would attain riches”.

The Kupal’ska ritual is highly symbolic. Kupal’s’ki fires symbolize a cult of the Sun. Kupal’s’ka water is a symbol of healing power. A fern is a symbol of a happy future. Magic Ivanivs’ka dew provides beauty and love, and the Kupala tree denotes fertility and happiness. The Kupala ritual, as with Ukrainians, was widespread not only among the Slavic people, but also included other segments of Europe and even India. In particular, Bulgarians believed that on Kupala the Sun is “dancing” and “twirling the sabres”. Polish girls baked ceremonial “sun” cakes while Englishmen sought out the fern, not for the sake of the blossom of a burning flower, but for its seeds which can make a man invisible.

Scammers in Ukraine. Ten Ways to Determine if She is Honest.

Scammers in Ukraine. Ten Ways to Honesty…

The realities in Ukraine can be surprising to say the least. There are many beautiful women in Ukraine but, scammers in Ukraine are everywhere. Working at an agency is just one way scammers make money.

Teaching English in Ukraine…
Scammers in Ukraine
Scammers in Ukraine

Most women found through so-called marriage agencies are married or are in a relationship. Women work at Marriage agencies because they need a job. My best guess is that close to one in one hundred are serious. Here are a few thoughts that will help you determine if a woman is real or not. Just remember to keep your eyes wide open and your wallet closed. Also? remember that scammers in Ukraine are looking for you. A person with cash.

Before you Decide to Travel…

The best way to determine if a woman is honest is to do your homework long before you decide to visit her in her own country. If you make the decision to actually go and visit her, you will be in an elite group of men who make the journey. There are countless scammers in Ukraine.

Before Travel to Ukraine…

Before travelling to meet a lady in Ukraine, there a few things you must do. No matter where you came in contact with this lady, you should have communicated online for at least two months. You should have spoken to her through the agency at least twice. You must have her contact information before you actually go to meet her.

Scammers in Ukraine Information…

Scammers in Ukraine don’t want to give you contact information most of the time. You must have called her phone number and spoken to her ten times. It does not matter if she speaks English or not. It is more about whether you actually have her phone number and if she answers the phone. A real honest woman will always enjoy hearing your voice.

Number One…

The first time you both sit together at a cafe, she won’t be hungry, she won’t eat much, she will be nervous. She will most likely eat very little or nothing at all. A pro-dater will know the menu by heart and will be hungry. A dishonest woman might request sushi or will tell you to take her to an expensive five star restaurant. Ladies and agencies often receive a commission from the restaurant.

Who is Larisa English?…

Number Two…

A dishonest woman might ask you to buy her something. Often something small at first. A real pro-dater will never ask directly. She will make subtle hints and watch your reaction very carefully. A serious, honest woman will never ask or hint that she wants anything. Even if she desperately needs something. She will never ask.

Number Three…

If a woman suggests that you just take a look in a store for any reason be careful. It’s rare that a woman goes window shopping with a man she just met. She won’t want to make the wrong impression with her new friend. If she wants to go into a store, Just tell her that you will wait outside. See what her attitude is. Is she angry?

Number Four…

Has she made any comments regarding her phone? Does it need repair? Is it an old phone? Has she indicated in any way that she needs a new mobile phone? If she has suggested in any way that she needs a new mobile phone, ask her what a new mobile phone costs. A phone with every bell and whistle costs less than $100 in Ukraine.

Number Five…

Is she ill? Does she need to see a doctor? Does she need medicine? Is her grandmother in the hospital? If she suggests any of these problems, most likely she is dishonest. A real woman in Ukraine will rarely ask or hint that she needs anything from you. Honest Ukrainian women are way too proud to ask for anything.

Number Six…

Has the woman you went to meet invited you to the marriage agency? Has she asked that you meet the manager of the agency? Has she given you the address of the agency? Has she invited you to meet her friends at the agency? Honest women and agencies will be happy to introduce you to their friends.

Schedule a conference today. Contact Billgreen54.

Number Seven…

Does she spend everyday with you while you are in her city? Does she spend an hour or two? If she can’t spend time with you, why did you go to meet her? If she is working, where does she work? Has she told you? Has she invited you to her place of work? If not, there is something very wrong.

Number Eight…

After the first meeting, does she insist that you meet her with an agency interpreter? How much English does she actually speak? What foreign language did she study at school? After the first meeting, you don’t need an interpreter even if she doesn’t speak any English. All Ukrainians must study a foreign language in school. Most study English at some level.

Number Nine…

Has she asked you for money? Has she indicated that she needs money for any reason? Is she wearing the same clothes every time you meet with her? Has she indicated that she needs to pay some bills? Has she asked you to buy food or clothes for her child, friends or parents? Once again, real Ukrainian women never ask for anything until you have developed a serious relationship over time.

Schedule a conference today. Contact Billgreen54.

Number Ten…

Has she said that she loves you? Has she indicated that you are the one she has been looking for? Does she tell you that you are the one? These are all signs that a Ukrainian woman isn’t honest.

Earning the heart of a real Ukrainian woman will be the most difficult challenge of your lifetime. Until you have proven your true intentions and affection for her, she won’t permit you into her heart. Give your new friendship time and anything is possible.

The First Meeting

The First Meeting…

For the Man… Thoughts and Perspectives…

The First Meeting is the most important article I have ever written. It is also the most read of all my articles written over the past nine years. Read it carefully and increase your odds of creating a real relationship dramatically. The first time you actually come and meet a lady in a foreign land, what should you plan for?. What should you expect? How should you act? What should you say?

Getting to know each other
Sitting on a Park Bench

How do you speak to her in another language? Should you meet her alone or with a friend or interpreter? Should I show her photos of my stuff? Should I give her an expensive gift? What should we do together at the first meeting? What kind of flowers would she like? The first time we meet, should we kiss, shake hands or hug? And last…… Confusing emotions and feelings with words before we meet face to face…….. There are too many subjects to try and cover here including culture, table manners, superstitions, drinking alcohol, which hand to toast with and why, who should pour, what not to do, meeting her family, offensive statements, joking, teasing and more. Be very careful in these areas of conduct. They can cause a great deal of misunderstanding and more.

Establishing Honesty in Not An Option…

Essential communication
Communication is essential

As in any relationship; personal or business, a foundation of honesty needs to be established. This applies to both men and women. If you’re communicating with a woman over the Internet living just down the street or around the world, determining a persons honesty is just about impossible. Trust and honesty are earned by actions and deeds with a great deal of time. Sometimes years, sometimes minutes. Communicating on the Internet with trust takes a gigantic leap of faith in the person you are communicating with. It’s the same for the first meeting and the days that follow for both of you. The need to establish honesty and trust is not an option. It’s the difference between success and failure in everything we do.

The First Meeting Ten Years Ago…

Bill and Larisa Green Nikolaev

The thoughts you are about to read are from my experiences in life spanning 63 years. I will also share the experiences of many others who write me daily and meet us in person in Nikolaev, Ukraine. It was over ten years ago when I decided to begin searching for the woman of my dreams; thank God she found me! Her name is Larisa. We live life to the fullest while we enjoy each day together teaching English and helping friends around the world. After we met on the Internet and communicated for 4 months, we met face to face at the Odessa airport in April, 2007. I remember that first meeting like it was minutes ago. If I could go back in time, I would only wish that I knew then, what I know today…..

The First Meeting Might be The Last…

Conversation is Ask, Answer and Ask…

Bill and Larisa Classroom
Bill and Larisa at school

The first time you meet face to face, just be yourself. Don’t worry about anything but what you want to say. Keep it simple and plan to just find a level of comfort as you both make eye contact and get to know each other. The lady you are coming to meet will be nervous, just like you. She will be just as concerned, worried and nervous as you. That’s a good thing. Try to stay away from subjects that are too complicated. Save that for another day. Think about subjects you both have in common. Ask, answer and ask. I teach conversation skills everyday to students learning English. As you ask and she answers, listen to her answers and choose a few key word subjects. Again, ask, answer and ask. It’s also a good idea to write yourself a few thoughts about what you might discuss. Subjects like the movies, food, travel and jobs are probably something you discussed or wrote about before you met in person. Ask about things to do in her city. What are the sights she has never had the chance to see or visit?

Conversation Should be 50/50 at The First Meeting…

Now the Clock Starts Over…

Communication Nikolaev Ukraine
Long distance communication

Be very aware of physical contact and her reaction. You two have just met for the first time and even simple things like holding hands might feel awkward. Remember that getting to know someone takes time. It’s possible to have that chemistry from the very beginning, but the odds are that real chemistry will not materialize the first day or two. You will both be getting to know each other little by little. Don’t be in a hurry to prove anything. The first few days is a time for both of you to get to learn each other. The fact that you both met and communicated long distance might mean very little when you actually meet in person. Communicating from a distance is a way to get to know some things about each other, but it’s impossible to actually get to know the other as a person until you meet face to face and spend time together. The reality is that when two people meet in person even after communicating long distance for months, THE CLOCK STARTS OVER!

Let her reach for your hand first…

Language Difference, It’s not that tough…

Language Translation Nikolaev
Language Translator Device

Language difference can be a hindrance or a good thing. Look at it like the glass is halfway full instead of halfway empty. Consider the fact that many couples who speak the same language can’t communicate and struggle to find common ground daily. Consider that most divorces begin and end with poor communication. Sharing your thoughts, feelings and more with a woman who speaks another language, can be a real life adventure if you let it. Larisa and I didn’t speak the same language when we first met. We both decided to learn each others language although Larisa is way ahead of me on that one. Trust me, learning Russian will be the second toughest thing you will ever do. We have never used an Interpreter. From the start, Larisa and I agreed that we would use an Electronic Translator to help us communicate. There is a lot more to this. Just remember that it takes two to Tango and two to have a conversation that makes sense. Take one step at a time and you will soon speak the same language.

Finally, The First Meeting…

Dating sites Nikolaev UKraine

Meeting face to face for the very first time should be done with an Interpreter or a friend of the lady you are meeting. This is for many reasons. Just remember that after the first meeting, both of you can decide to meet alone or with help. If you meet alone, it’s a good idea to use an Electronic Translator and have a phone handy to contact a friend just in case something needs clarification. If you do need an Interpreter, just remember to speak directly to the lady you came to meet, not directly to the Interpreter. Many men and women make the mistake of speaking to the Interpreter and telling her to tell the other what I said sort of routine. A good Interpreter will give you instructions before you have too much to say and translate exactly what you are trying to say. There are occasions where the Interpreter will offer advice to you. This is OK as long as it is limited in time and scope.

Photos and The First Gift……

Gift Delivery Nikolaev Ukraine
Flowers and Gifts Nikolaev

Meeting a woman for the first time will give you both plenty to discuss. Leave the photos at home or your hotel room. A real woman will just want to get to know you for who you are, not what you own. Showing off your home and automobiles will often send a mixed signal to the lady. She might think you are bragging or trying to convince her that you have stuff that she might like instead of just liking you. Often, a woman can be resentful and feel inferior to you because you have a lot of things that she doesn’t. If you decide to show her your stuff anyway, do it later down the road and definitely, not the first time you meet. Gifts should always be simple and inexpensive. A gift with a maximum value of about twenty dollars or so, like a souvenir from home, possibly a pair of earrings should do the trick. It’s not what you give her, it’s the fact that you remembered her.

Flowers and A Box of Chocolates…

Chocolates and Flowers Nikolaev

Giving her flowers and a box of chocolates is also a great way to show you care for that first meeting. Remember that a simple box of chocolates from your hometown will most likely be something new to her. Flowers can also be a nice way to say hello for the first time. Any flowers would be nice, but roses are usually the flowers of choice. Three or five would be a good number to start with, red or pink is fine. Remember to always give odd numbers. Even numbered bouquets symbolize death or a funeral. One red rose is fine after you have met a few times and you both know there is chemistry between you. One red rose symbolizes love, so only give her one rose if you are sure she is the one.

Pleased to meet you…

Enjoy time with your friend

Meeting for the first time should be respectful and sincere. In most cases, a simple handshake and hello is the best way to introduce yourself for the first time. Do not over do it by insisting on a kiss or hug the very first time. If you’ve communicated for some time before you met her face to face, often a person can have feelings or emotions that somehow seem real. This can be the first indication that you are one of the lucky ones or your sixth sense just kicked in. It’s best to reserve any emotions or feelings that you might have. Take it slow and if both of you make it past the first meeting, anything is possible.

Why are Ukrainian Women Special?

Why are Ukrainian Women Special?

Billgreen54 Nikolaev Ukraine

This question is posed to me just about everyday. Why are Ukrainian women different? Why are they special? Why do men from around the world search for a woman to love in Ukraine? Why do women from Ukraine search outside her own country?

Bill and Larisa First Met Ten Tears Ago…

Beautiful Ukrainian Woman
Special Ukrainian Woman

It’s impossible to come up with a generic answer. I can only share my experiences since my search began for Larisa in December, 2006. We first met face to face at the Odessa airport in April, 2007. While living in Nikolaev teaching over 15,000 academic hours of English it would be impossible not to have learned a little something about everyday life and real people in Ukraine.

Bill is From California…

A Few Facts…

A few facts. A real Ukrainian woman can’t lie under any conditions. She will never ask for money or accept gifts from someone she hasn’t known personally over an extended period of time. She is faithful to a fault and can have a slightly elevated level of jealousy towards other women, including close friends.

The First Meeting. This is a Must Read!

Pride and Dignity…

Women here are special for many reasons, including their ability to stretch a dime into a dollar. Faithfulness in a relationship is never talked about, but is always understood. Real women here carry themselves with pride and dignity everyday. Going out of the house anywhere in society is never done in anything less than fashion, class and style. From cooking the tastiest foods anywhere, there’s never an empty stomach. The thought of preparing anything from a box is unheard of.

Don’t Wait Any Longer. Schedule a Conference with Bill…

Be Honest With Her…

Men from many countries come to Ukraine to meet real woman. The biggest problem is that most of the men who actually make it to Ukraine are less than honest. Always be honest with a woman here and you stand a good chance of creating something special.

New Years Day in Nikolaev January 1, 2011.

New Years Day in Nikolaev…

Here is a request from a friend who wants to learn more about Ukraine and how Ukrainians celebrate New Years Eve. I wrote this article just after English Club Saturday morning at our school in Nikolaev, New Years Day on January first, a few years ago.

New Years Celebration…

Hi Bill,

I hope your Christmas and New Years was good. I am curious about the differences in how Ukrainians celebrate the holidays. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with your readers. I hope to come to Nikolaev Soon.

Best regards,

New Years
New Years Fireworks

Hi Van,

Our New Years celebration was great. We wish that yours is as well. We hope that all your dreams and goals come true for the coming year. Larisa and I celebrated it alone with a nice dinner at a cafe just around the corner from our office. When I say alone, I mean that we were the only customers in the cafe. That was around 7:30. Sovietskaya was nearly empty. I’m sure everyone was at home preparing for the late night celebration. Although we were invited to several friends homes, we decided to spend the evening alone. This was partly due to the fact that the last three nights were spent celebrating with friends, so we decided to stay home.

By the way, food prices in Nikolaev are reasonable, including meals at most cafes and restaurants. Our meal consisted of a Greek salad, vegetables, fried chicken, french fries and two drinks. All for about 21USD including tip.

Open 24 Hours…

Most people in Ukraine are busy preparing for the late evening and don’t go out for dinner on New Years Eve. Most restaurants, cafes and stores here are closed by 6pm as well. The exception to that are the largest food stores that stay open late. Some stay open 24 hours. I am sure it has to do with liquor sales as well as food. Last year, we noticed even fewer places that were open New Years Eve.

Taxi Fare is Cheap…

After dinner, we bought some fruit and made our way back to our flat. We don’t drive a car here, so we ride the bus everyday. Buses here can be the size of a city bus or as small as a van for about 12 people called a Marshutka.. Last night, there were very few buses running at 9, but many will come out at midnight when everyone comes downtown for the New Years concert. Taxi’s are available if you are willing to pay three times the usual price. That would be about 5USD to get across town.

The Central Meeting Place…

New Years on Sovietskaya

Often throughout the year, major holidays are celebrated at the end of Sovietskaya street. This is the main street in the center of the city. This street permits foot traffic only. Cars haven’t been allowed on Sovietskaya for close to a hundred years. It’s the central meeting place for all city or national holidays.

We enjoyed bringing in the new year with a bottle of champagne while watching fireworks outside our balcony and a little TV. In Ukraine, fireworks are readily available to anyone with cash. Although the government tells the citizens of Ukraine not to buy fireworks from anyone without a license to sell them, they do it anyway. There are also many licensed vendors selling fireworks as well. When I say fireworks, I don’t just mean firecrackers. They are the real deal and everyone sets them off at midnight and beyond. Usually lasting just less than one hour, fireworks light up the sky and can be seen in every direction. It’s really very cool.

Food and Fun Nikolaev

Our evening was a little different than the way most celebrate New Years Eve here. Most people will spend New Years Eve day getting ready for a late night. They will start preparing food in the morning and into the early evening. Many people will take a short rest early evening before waking up and beginning the nights celebration with dinner sometime after nine.

Wee Hours of The Morning…

The celebration starts with dinner and drinks with friends and family. Ukrainians will enjoy the evening eating and drinking often until the wee hours of the morning. Larisa and I celebrated our first New Years together here in Nikolaev, many years ago. We celebrated until five in the morning, slept for five hours and started all over again on New Years day.

Sadly, Most Men Fail at Meeting a Real Woman in Ukraine

A Few Things You Should Know…

For all those men who consider traveling to Ukraine plan on meeting a real woman for the first time, BEWARE. There are at least 100 things you should know before considering a trip to Ukraine with the thought of meeting a real woman for the first time. Here are just a few.

Jim was 67, She wasn’t. Does age matter?

Truth about Age Difference…

Who is man's best friend?
Man’s Best Friend

The average age difference of a foreign man and a woman from Ukraine that actually do develop a relationship that ends in marriage is 9 years, not 20, 30 or 40. Most men think that because this is Ukraine, age doesn’t matter. This could not be further from the truth. Actually, most Ukrainian women marry a man near her age. Never trust anyone telling you that age never matters. They are terribly misinformed.

The First Meeting. This is a Must Read!

Ninety Nine Percent Fail…

Different man Nikolaev Ukraine
Odd Man Out Nikolaev

Ninety nine percent of the men who actually travel to Ukraine to meet a Ukrainian woman he thought he had some kind of relationship with fail to create and develop an honest relationship. This is always due to a lack of education and most men being too trusting and naive. You can increase your odds of success by educating yourself and learning how to succeed. Meeting a real woman is possible with the right attitude and knowledge.

Conferences Scheduled Here…

Communicate by Phone Beforehand…

Talk by Phone
Phone Conversation First

No man should ever travel to Ukraine to meet a woman he has met online before communicating with her by phone, personal emails and more. Many men travel to Ukraine to meet a woman he thought was real. The fact is that Larisa and I have met hundreds of men who met a woman that had never heard of him. They discover that the agency communicated with the man without telling the woman in the pretty picture. There are ways to avoid this. Meeting a real woman for the first time should only be done after communicating in a verifiable way.

Tours and Socials. Don’t Waste Your Money…

Are You One of The Normal Guys?…

American in Nikolaev Ukraine
Normal American Guy

Ninety two point five percent or so of the men who travel to Ukraine to meet a woman are abnormal, dysfunctional in some way, flat outright ugly or just plain stupid. As rude and to the point as this statement is, it is true. It’s is sad and unfortunate. Most of these men believe they are in love or they have a serious relationship before ever meeting a lady. This is a fantasy. You can only develop a real relationship after meeting face to face. I have met many men in Nikolaev who have stated that they were in love before ever meeting a lady. This is not normal for sure. Set yourself apart. Don’t do all the things the abnormal guys do.

Bill and Larisa First Met Ten Tears Ago…

Meeting a Real Woman…

Wedding Day Ukraine
Ukrainian Wedding Day After

Most men who travel to Ukraine, fail at developing an honest relationship. Sadly, this can be avoided with a little education. Real men never touch a Ukrainian woman first. Strange odd men, just want to touch and feel. Most of the men who travel to Ukraine are searching for eye candy. They usually follow the same pattern. Sit close, hug and kiss. This is just plain dumb. Friends first, lovers later. Wait for the woman to hold your hand first. Schedule a conference and I will tell you more about touching and feeling a Ukrainian woman.

Don’t Wait Any Longer. Schedule a Conference with Bill…

It’s Okay to Ask For Help…

If you are considering a holiday to Ukraine for the purpose of creating a relationship with Mrs Right, NEVER, NEVER DO IT ALONE. Ask for help. I mean, NEVER! The first problem a man has when he travels around the world to meet a woman for the first time is… Sleep deprivation…. Your body clock is completely backwards. Often, men don’t think clearly. After you get rid of the jet lag, things get more real. The main problem here is that most men come to Nikolaev for a ten day stay. This is just long enough to wake up and then travel back home. You need someone to share a few thoughts with. Meeting a real woman will give you a chance to create and develop a real relationship.

Bill is From California…

Never Give Cash To New Friend…

Remember, love is blind, keep your wallet closed and your eyes wide open when coming to Ukraine to meet a woman. Most of the women you meet through tours and socials or meet and greets are not honest. They are just looking for some extra cash. Most women found online are working girls. They get paid to communicate with you in many ways. This includes chat, video chat, letter writing, meeting you and more. All gifts ordered through an agency are never delivered. They are exchanged for cash. Everyone takes a cut, the website, agency and lady you think you are communicating with. Never, Never send gifts through a dating site or agency. Never trust a photo sent to you.

Meeting a Ukrainian Woman Online… John’s Letter with Answers….

John’s Letter with Answers…

Receiving and answering letters daily takes a lot of time and effort. These days, I can’t reply to every letter but, I try to answer the most important letters sent to me. This letter from John was sent a few years ago but, it is still pertinent. Take some time and read John’s letter with answers. Enjoy!

I have been reading your website for about 4 hours now and have found a lot of good information. I do have a request for services, but I want to also give you the story of why I would like to use your translator service! Please feel free to post it on your forum.

Lonely American Man
Average American Man

Well I am a 40 year old man and not bad looking with a good job. I have found that the women in the US have lost all traditional values among other things. Well I am newly divorced but was separated for a very long time. I wanted to get back into dating and was not looking for women more than 50 miles from where I live!

Conferences Scheduled Here…

John’s Letter, Answers and Solutions…

I joined several dating sites with no luck. In that time I found that a lot of women from outside of the USA use locations from the US as there home listing on dating sites. Please let your readers be aware of this!

Well, in my search I got contacted by one of my match’s (Not on Match dot com) and she is from Nikolaev Ukraine. I didn’t think much of it and did a short reply about her being real! Well after about a month of emailing though the dating site we decided to see where things could go between us. So we closed our dating sites to see where things will go!

I want to remind your readers that education is the key to being safe when talking to and dating girls from out of the country. During our time on the dating site I started to research all I could about dating outside of the USA. I started to learn as much as I could about the Ukraine culture!

I do not speak Russian and she speaks no English, but I am taking Russian courses! I have only made a few small mistakes in communicating with her but only because I educated myself before hand! If I would have not done my home work I would have made some big mistakes. I may not have been writing this today!

We are now in a committed relationship on-line which takes a level of trust that I can not even describe! I even sent her a camera (yes a gift over $20) and said it was ours not hers so she could take pictures of her life to share with me! I have also sent her flowers the first time was on Women’s day this year and one rose last week.

Now when you use a service to send gifts let your readers know that the easiest way to prove who you are talking to, is to have the gift delivered with picture or video taken on delivery! This was the proof that I got to know who I was talking to, just to protect myself. We also Skype about every three weeks, so I know who I am talking to and am going to meet.

Things have been going really well and I believe that good things can come form this relationship, and I feel she feels the same way. We do have an age difference, she is 28 and I am 40, but my rule of thumb is this ((AGE/2)+7) which may not work for everyone but it does work well from age 21 and up! Well through our communications we started to talk about me going to visit her, and after some research on cost she actually encourage me to not come, as to not spend the money!

I explained to her that the cost of dating a woman in the USA would add up to the trip cost over time so the cost didn’t bother me! She was OK with this and we set up a time frame that works best for her and her work! She is a Nurse in a state hospital in Nikolaev. Well I now have the plane tickets in hand and will be visiting for 9 days in August! Wish us luck, because I feel it will be and adventure!

So I will be arriving to my apartment on August 12th 2012 and would like to have a translator for a good part of the day on August 13th 2012 as long as her day off stays a day off, but you know how it goes with hours and state hospitals!

I feel it would be a good thing for the first meet and just to spend time getting to know one another looking around the city! If all goes well then to dinner with the interpreter as well. I do have an iPhone and have a really great app that I feel will be perfect for the rest of my time there!

We are only planning one night out and the other times we will be cooking in and by weeks end if she feels the same as she does now a dinner at her Granny’s house and one at her brothers house. I also would like to visit your school on the main street while there and in the future may look to other services offered by you for her! I am a Information Technology manager so who knows I may not want to leave and get a job there!

Thank You

My Response to John…

Hi John,
Thanks for writing.

I try to find a few minutes each week to post a few thoughts. I am glad you found some useful information. Be sure to contact me just before yo make it to Nikolaev so we can schedule an interpreter for you.

The First Meeting. This is a Must Read!

John’s Letter with Answers is Typical…

Your story sounds similar to mine starting out in 2006, however, one of the things I have learned from my experience is to never open and answer a letter sent to me first. Your situation is a little different.

Leaving a paid website can have a little of the good, bad and ugly. When you are using an international dating website, there are some protections you might want to know about.

Larisa is from Ukraine…

Read John’s Letter with Answers First…

First, all girls (even professional chatters and letter writers) get paid to chat with men everyday. They also use other ladies profiles without web-cam to chat and make money for herself, the agency and the website on many more than just one website.

Second, all ladies who use reputable paid websites, sign a contract. It says many things, including that a woman will never ask for money or gifts. If she does, I have known many men who have received massive refunds and credits. Of course, there is a lot more to this, just remember that once you communicate outside an agency and paid web site, you are on your own with no recourse if something goes sour. Personally, I would NEVER COMMUNICATE with any woman outside an agency and paid website before we have met at least once face to face.

You stated that she speaks no English. Why is that? What foreign language did she study at school? Have you asked her? All citizens of Ukraine are required to study at least one foreign language. Ninety percent study English.

You are obviously new to dating overseas. All girls who are sent a gift through a paid website or marriage agency, rarely take the gift. They always take the cash. The odds are, the photos you looked at are stock photos. Pick a color… any color and there you go. John’s letter with answers is full of interesting thoughts. Only purchase gifts through reputable companies, but never an agency. Half of the time, a girl is never even told she has been sent a gift. The agencies often forget and the gift is never delivered unless the lady asked…. WHAT HAPPENED!

If she says she doesn’t speak English, you need to find out if she is interested in taking English lessons. If she is willing, that is often a good thing. However, never pay her directly or through an agency or paid web site. This is not a request that she comes to our school. You can have her go anywhere. It just makes sense not to send money to someone you don’t know and have never met face to face.

You said you are using Skype every three weeks. Why is that? If you two are serious, why not speak with each other everyday? Even if she doesn’t speak English (which I seriously doubt) both of you will have a lot of fun. It’s not about the fact that you are speaking English, it’s more about the fact that you have taken the time to meet with her. Remember that people communicate many different ways. Only half or less of human communication is done with language.

Trust and honesty must be earned by time actions and deeds only after two people have met face to face and have spent time together. Ninety nine percent of all men who travel overseas to meet a Ukrainian woman with the hopes of building a lifelong loving relationship FAIL miserably. They fail to see what’s usually staring them right in the face.

Normally, I no longer have the time to reply in such detail. I wanted to take a little extra time today in the hopes that others will benefit from your search for true love and benefit from a few of my thoughts.

Also, International dating is just like playing rugby when the sport was first created. Unless you are both playing by the same rules, one is sure to lose the game and there will be more disagreements than you could possibly count. Searching for love isn’t a game, but dishonest ladies look at it exactly like that. A GAME WITH SPECIAL RULES…..

Just remember to keep your wallet closed and your eyes wide open.

A letter from Bob

A Letter from Bob about Tour Companies…

Romance Tours in Nikolaev Ukraine. Not what you think.

Questions and answers
Bob’s questions

Here is a guy that has gone on romance tours offered by tour companies five times without any luck. If romance tour companies offered the best thing since the invention of the wheel, why hasn’t Bob found his princess? Is there something wrong with Bob? Is there something the tour companies aren’t telling you? Read through our website for the answers to your questions. It’s free and always informative. Information contained on this website comes from years of investigations and interviews.

Bob’s Letter…

My (skype also) name is Bob Jones (name changed), Naples, Florida , USA.

I have sent you contact request on Skype

Wish to book a conference to know why you say Romance Tours are a bad idea.

Have been to Ukraine 5 times on Romance Tours offered by tour companies, with a big variety of experiences, not all good either. Still alone. Still searching.

Bob Jones

My Reply to Bob…

Hi Bob,

Thank you for writing.

I have added you to my Skype. Look for me online. I will try to speak with you when possible. If I am not able to speak with you when you let me know you are there, I will let you know when my next opening is.

Anyone who has been searching unsuccessfully for years, needs a new game plan. Based on your five times using the services of a so-called tour company, don’t you think you could have spent your $25,000 a little more wisely?

The answers to your question are extremely simple. After living in Nikolaev over nine years, here are my observations and facts.

I am always surprised at the statements made by the last couple of companies offering tours. They paint a pretty picture to extract as much cash as possible out of the unsuspecting.

Making promises to men who are just trying to find their other half. Never trust anything a tour company owner or representative tells you. False claims are just that. If a representative of a tour company claims an eighty percent success rate, he is lying.

There is a company in Southern California or Nevada offering social tours and meet and greet services in Nikolaev that makes this promise to all that will listen. Even the owner of that company has admitted he isn’t telling the truth. How can anyone promise eight out of ten men find true love? It is actually the complete opposite and less. Based on my nine years living in Nikolaev Ukraine, it is clear to me that less than seven percent find a companion. This is my estimate based on all the men who visit my office in Nikolaev after they have finished a tour.

The following facts came from several companies websites offering tours and socials in Nikolaev. Most of these companies are now out of business.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, there were at least seven companies offering tours and social events conducted in Nikolaev Ukraine. At that time, it was extremely common to see a tour group of 60 to 80 men. It was very common to see two buses pull up to a nightclub. Most of these tour companies would travel to Nikolaev at least five times a year.

NINE YEARS AGO, when we began helping foreign men with questions here in Nikolaev, we made a point of watching all the buses when they would arrive at a nightclub in Nikolaev. The first time we did this, there were just 23 men who got off the bus. Four times a year is the norm.

Currently in 2016, there are just two active companies that still offer tours in Nikolaev. They come four times a year or less and the average group size is between 8 and 12.

So, lets do the math.

FIFTEEN years ago, seven tour companies.

An average of at least 50 men five times a year equals 250 per company annually in Nikolaev.

Seven tour companies multiplied by 250 equals 1,750 men attending socials annually in Nikolaev.

Today, just two tour companies still operate in Nikolaev Ukraine.

An average of 10 men four times a year equals 40 per company annually in Nikolaev Ukraine.

Two tour companies multiplied by 40 equals 80 men attending socials annually in Nikolaev Ukraine.

1,750 less 80 equals 1,670 fewer men searching for true love in Nikolaev Ukraine annually by attending a social event.

Would you call that a successful business?
What do the numbers tell you?
Would you say that socials are as popular as ever?
Why do you think the tour and social business has dried up?
Do companies offering tours have a conscience?
Where is any physical proof of claims made by these companies?

It’s my understanding that successful businesses grow with time and success. This is done by offering quality products and services customers appreciate and tell others about.

One of the biggest mistakes a man makes is thinking that women in Ukraine like going to a social event. This couldn’t be further from the truth. I have interviewed women in Nikolaev many times. Over 500 interviews in a nine year time span actually. All interviews in the city of Nikolaev.

In every interview, women always ask the same question “Why does a foreign man need help with love?” Is he stupid? Has he ever been married? Why would a real man need someone to help him find a real woman in Ukraine? Why would any man be so weak minded as to need someone to show him a real woman?

Women in Ukraine look at all men who need a coach or someone to guide him as weak. Weak minded. Weak character. Why does a real men need anyone to hold his hand when it comes to developing a relationship?

There is a lot more to this and there is a better way to find real women in Ukraine. We have been helping men and women come together for nine years now. We offer every service imaginable to clients around the world.

Look for me on Skype. We can schedule a conference. A conference costs a little and will save you thousands. A conference will also help you stop wasting valuable time.

My conferences are always about you and how to help you with my experience and the experiences of others. Remember that one size NEVER fits all.

Living in Ukraine for nine years has taught me a lot about how people live in Nikolaev Ukraine. Jobs, education, family, food, entertainment, money, culture and yes; relationships. Sadly, most of what you hear from tour and socials operators simply isn’t true. Groups of men are herded into a room and told to ask women, “Are you searching for a husband?” That statement is terribly insulting to a Ukrainian woman. It’s insulting and demeaning. There are many ways to ask that question indirectly. That statement has a very serious meaning to a real woman in Ukraine.

Jim at 67. Does age difference really matter?

Jim at 67 and Age Difference

Jim wrote me wondering about age difference. This is the most talked about topic from friends around the world. Does age difference really matter? I shared some thoughts that I hope will offer a little more insight on the subject……. Enjoy!

Jim’s Letter…

Hi Bill and Larisa, thanks for your help.

I find Alla to be a beautiful woman. She appears to be a down to earth type person. Does she interest me, yes. Bill my only concern is her age. After reading articles regarding reasonable age differences, I wonder about the age gap of 30 years. I am sure that you and Larisa know far more about Alla than I do. What is your take on the age difference and what does Alla think? I love children, so Alla having 2 children is not a problem for me.

Thanks for the efforts of you and Larisa.

Bill’s Response…

Hi Jim, thanks for writing…..

Age difference
Jim 67 Nikolaev Ukraine

Age difference is often the first topic that comes up regarding cross cultural relationships. The first rule of thumb is this…. If two people truly love each other, age doesn’t matter. This school of thought is worldwide. That said, age does have a lot to do with many things in our everyday life as a person.

Common Life Experiences…

Young woman Nikolaev Ukraine
Age matters and Jim 67

When there’s a great age difference between two people, there are fewer common life experiences to build on together as a loving couple. This could be looked at as a disadvantage towards developing and maintaining a strong lifelong relationship. Age difference should be regarded as an opportunity to learn from each others book of life. It just makes common sense, the younger we are, the less we know. As we continue to grow through life, we learn from our successes and failures as well as examples set by others. When someone is in their twenties, for most of us, our adult lives are just beginning.

25, Time to Have a Baby…

Pretty woman Nikolaev
Beautiful Woman Nikolaev

For women at the age of 25, the road of life gets much more serious. If a Ukrainian woman isn’t in a genuine relationship by the time she’s 25, she might be considered an old maid. This has everything to do with child bearing age as well as the concern for proper health care. I’ve been told this by many women and men of all ages here. It’s always been part of the culture. Slavic men look at life more seriously towards their late twenties as opposed to their early twenties. This is for several reasons, including the fact that there are more women here than men. Many men still live with mom and dad into their late twenties and early thirties. Obviously, there is no pressure for men to create a life of their own.

Eight Years Age Difference…

Ukrainian Happy Family

For men, theirs no reason to marry early, there are plenty of women to develop a relationship with. For a man, by waiting a little longer, he has time to experience several relationships and have a better chance of finding a lifelong partner. The average age difference for a man and woman who are in a serious relationship in a cross cultural relationship with a woman from the FSU, is eight years. That said, the older a woman is here, the less importance placed on age difference.

Love or Money?…

Love and Money
Love or Money Nikolaev

Every woman I’ve met in Nikolaev is more interested in what’s in a mans heart, not his pocketbook. That’s true whether the man comes from Ukraine or any other country in the world. For most women under the age of 25 to fall in love with a man in his 40’s, she will love your money much more than you. It’s probably true with men and women from most countries to have this same kind of mindset.

Chemistry, Luck and Age…

Relationship Nikolaev Ukraine
Love in Nikolaev Ukraine

My observations are based on my experience with hundreds of people while living in Ukraine over the past decade. If a man is serious, knows what he’s doing and has decided to seek a life partner in Ukraine, anything is possible. While eight years is the average age difference, I truly believe that twenty is the maximum. That said, Larisa and I are nineteen years apart. We don’t talk about age difference. In fact, age has never a topic for discussion. Looking back, for both of us, it just seemed natural to get to know more about each other without dwelling on age. We both agree that we were lucky to have found each other and their is no question about our chemistry.

Nearing The Age of Forty…

Beautiful Ukrainian Woman
Ukrainian Woman Fortyish

As a Ukrainian woman approaches the age of 40, there is an increasing likelihood that she isn’t as concerned about age difference. She is more interested in finding a man that’s responsible, honest and loving. An honest man should think the same way. If you and a Ukrainian woman can find common ground with that magic and chemistry, anything is possible.

The First Meeting. This is a Must Read!

Money, Flat and Job…

A Ukrainian woman in her 40’s is also less likely to consider a relationship with a foreigner. Why? It’s all about where she is in her life and the near future. Most Ukrainian women in their 40’s are set for life. Many own a flat, have money in the bank, have a great job. Being less dependent on others, creates independence without the need to gamble with a foreign relationship.

It was a decade ago, Larisa and I found each other on the Internet. Today, we live a great life in Nikolaev Ukraine. Larisa is the president of Larisa English Ukraine LLC and I spend my time writing, marketing and helping others. I hope you find useful information in Bobby’s letter.

The letter below was sent to me by Bobby. Enjoy!

Bobby’s Important Letter…

I am glad I read the blog entry Jon (Joninfla) started on his page regarding his visit to Nikolaev (http://www.nikolaevukraine.net/forum/read.php?2,71). I was wondering what was the true nature of Anas….. services and Jon’s and your comments gave me pause about the site. While some woman I’ve chatted with have asked me to visit (mostly from Odessa and Kharkov) others were more evasive when I mentioned my plan to visit this summer, even though they seemed interested (on the surface).

Now that I have read what really happens on the ground I will be more cautious, selective.

Thanks again. Hope you can offer further insight.

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for writing.

Jon is a great guy. We were glad to have met him in early 2008. He is married and quite happy. Since helping Jon, Larisa and I have helped hundreds personally and thousands on-line to have a better understanding of this process from start to finish.

Anas…. provides a website for Ukrainian marriage agencies to use as a marketing tool. The girls that work at agencies are paid a salary. The men and women who write letters are paid by the letter. Girls that chat with men are paid to chat. For ninety nine percent of the women found on Anas…, it’s nothing more than a job. Most are either married, in serious relationships, or use the money to support themselves.

Schedule Your Private Conference Today…

Most Ukrainian women never want to meet the man she is communicating with on an International dating website. They get paid to chat and write letters. Most of the women that are forced by the agency to meet a man from another country, find it disgusting and a waste of time.

The women and interpreters you actually meet in Ukraine, are well trained to extract as much cash from you as possible. In fact, most ladies working at agencies, are trained to scam and defraud as many foreigners as possible. In fact, these women are often trained by Americans and the British to take your money. They know they won’t get a second chance.

Most men who actually make it to Ukraine to meet a woman, fail to create a real relationship. They never come back. They fail to educate themselves and usually make silly mistakes. Men often make demands of a woman expecting her to do whatever he tells her to do. Not smart!

Bill is From California…

Education is the key to finding a real woman here. Educate yourself, and you stand a great chance of finding a real woman. There are countless women in Ukraine that would consider a loving relationship with a man from any country. You just have to know how to capture her heart. It’s much different than you think.

There are a number of ways to determine the honesty and sincerity of a woman on Anas……. Actually, it’s not difficult at all. A few simple questions and a couple of weeks. The first key to finding a serious Ukrainian woman, is to determine her honesty and sincerity.

Add Billgreen54 to your Skype. I look forward to meeting you.

Thanks again.

UPDATE! Here is John’s letter posted at a forum,,, I have added this post here to preserve it from deletion at the forum. Bill

Here is a link to the post http://www.nikolaevukraine.net/forum/read.php?2,71

Hello, I thought I would post this blog about my trip to the city of Nikolaev. I have always wanted to visit the Ukraine as it seemed like some of the most beautiful women in the world lived there. So I started using the Anastasia Web site to communicate with several ladies.

I picked the city of Nikolaev over others such as Odessa because most of the ladies I really liked were from Nikolaev, so that’s how I made my decision of which city to visit. Long before my trip, I told all the ladies I planned to meet in Nikolaev about the dates of my trip.

At first, they seemed excited that I would travel so far to meet them. But about a week before my trip, most of them wrote me back saying they could not meet me during my trip because they had to leave town on business.

One lady even told me she did not think our correspondence was long enough and did not want to meet so soon, which I thought was kind of stupid to waste more time just writing without meeting face to face, so I decided not to meet her. I did not think anything of it at first, as I still had a few that I was communicating with that still were open to meeting me.

I am from Florida and I had the benefit of traveling with a Ukrainian family who live here in Florida and were visiting their family in the Ukraine. We flew from New York to Kiev, and then took a bus to the city of Kharkov. I stayed with the Ukrainian family for a few days while in Kharkov.

I have to admit, I was not impressed with this city as it seemed kind of dumpy and run down, and I never really saw any women there I had any interest in, so I was looking forward to my trip to Nikolaev. I took a train from Kharkov to Nikolaev.

I only point this out because if you are not familiar with the Ukrainian train system, you will be in for a shock. The cars are old, and the lights in all the cabins did not even work, so there I was in a cabin with two other people in the dark who I could not talk with.

I had the misfortune of being assigned the top bunk, and thank God I am still in decent shape to hoist myself into these beds. In any event, most
cities in the Ukraine have bus service that runs between all the major cities in the Ukraine. I would strongly recommend taking the bus or plane, and not the train if you can avoid it.

I arranged to stay in my own apartment while in Nikolaev. The apartment was close to town with plenty of restaurants. I really was impressed with this city as it was clean, the food was good, and the people were very friendly. I know there are some blogs where guys have wrote negative things about this city, but I really did not find any of this to be true.

My understanding is that Nikolaev has only been open to foreigners for only 10 years, so they may be a little behind the times economically but I actually think Nikolaev was in better condition than Kharkov.

During my stay, I managed to meet up with an American guy and his girlfriend who live in Nikolaev. When I told them about my experience with the agency, they explained that most of the girls who are members of the agency make a commission for every letter they receive and write. They actually showed me an ad in a local newspaper for an agency that was looking for women to join.

The agency splits the money 50/50 with the women for each letter sent and received. So now I understood why some of my ladies backed out of meeting with me. They really never had any intention of meeting. So for you guys who receive so many letters from women, beware, this is how they make a living.

When I step back and look at the big picture of what I know and have now experienced, I would say that when many of these agencies started back in the early 90’s, they were for the most part legit and many guys found their brides in a place like the Ukraine, but somewhere along the way, they also realized that they could make even more money buy offering to pay women to write letters. Once this happened, it has compromised the integrity of the entire process.

The sad part of all this is that there are women in the Ukraine who are serious about finding a partner in another country, but knowing which ladies are really looking for someone versus the Ladies who are in it for the money is not easy to determine. So my advice to you is as follows if you decide to use an agency:

1) Avoid any woman under the age of 25.
2) Know when you are planning to take a trip to the Ukraine, and only write for say 1 month before your trip, and tell them in the first letter when you will be coming. Hopefully, this will cut down on your expense of writing endless letters, and weed out the ladies who just want to keep you writing with no intention of a meeting.
3) The Anastasia company says that you can ask for the ladies phone number two weeks prior to your trip, so try and get her phone number if you can. This is another big sign if she is serious about meeting you or not if she agrees to give you her phone number.

If what I just shared scares you from the agencies, and you should be scared, what I also would like to suggest is finding the Ukrainian community in your area. In most areas of the United States at least, you can find them on the Internet. Most are affiliated with a church, so you could make some friends there who know ladies in the Ukraine who are friends or family that might be interested in meeting you.

Finally, I did meet up with an American guy who lives in Nikolaev who can help you with determining if the lady you are writing to is for real before you spend a huge sum on letters, so if you are interested, please write me and I can pass along his email address to you.

One last point, there are so many negative people on this forum saying how the Ukraine is full of scammers, which is not true. Actually, if you want to blame someone, blame the American operators of these agencies who have created this environment.

Don’t you think if Match.com or one of the other domestic agencies started paying women to join, the result would be any different? Think about it, and don’t be discouraged if you don’t find someone immediately. Of course you hear of the success stories, but I can almost guarantee that most of those guys who did find their soul mate had to go through a great deal of time and expense to get there.

Good Luck,

Bobby’s letter is just one of thousands we have received over the years.

There are many things you need to know before you begin your search for an honest woman willing to develop a serious relationship with a man from another country. Communicating on-line isn’t easy. It is just one method to use while searching for Mrs Right.

How do I know? I have helped men by the hundreds face to face in Nikolaev better understand the entire process. I have helped men by the thousands who have read my articles. I write about cross cultural relationships and the search for true love.

Why do I do it?

Simple, really. I think that knowledge is useless unless you share with others what you have learned in life. Nearly everyday, I speak directly to or communicate in some other fashion with men from all over the world. These are men searching for a woman to love and share his life with. Communicating on-line is one of the many ways to find your other half.

There are three types of men who often need some guidance and an inside look at how all of this works. Marriage agencies, dating websites, tours and socials are all ways to meet people, but 99% of the time, you won’t find what you are searching for.

Why? Most men fail to educate themselves and often make the same mistakes over and over again and again. Most men I’ve met in Nikolaev over the years, have just given up and stopped coming to Ukraine thinking that somehow, there isn’t a woman here for him.

This is a letter from my friend, Robert. This article was originally written in 2009. It was updated in 2016. Send money to woman

Sending money to someone you have never met face to face and formed a real relationship with is always a bad idea. Most men who send money, tell me, they did it for the same reason; Because they could! What they fail to realize is that real women never ask for anything except your heart. If a woman decides to test you by asking for money or gifts, be careful. It is not about whether you can or not. It is more about you doing something silly. Only odd men try to buy love here. Spending much more than a twenty will put you in the same group as the others. Set yourself apart and you increase the odds of building a real relationship by a hundred fold.

Web sites and marriage agencies attempt to make you think that somehow, age difference never matters. The truth is, it does. It matters a lot. Time between two people is important for many reasons. Don’t be fooled by someone who tells you age difference does not matter. The average age difference between a Ukrainian woman and a Ukrainian man is just three years. For a foreigner and a Ukrainian woman, it is eight. While this is an average, there are beautiful relationships as far as twenty years apart. That is the true exception. It is one in a million.

If you get to this stage with one woman and your sixth sense kicks in, or you just want to come and meet her, then it’s time to meet face to face in her country. Without following these simple rules, you never know who you have been communicating with.

Never do it alone.

Love is Priceless
Falling in Love Nikolaev

Never do this without the help of someone who knows how things work in Ukraine. No man should do this alone. No man should search for a woman to love and share his life with from another country without the help of a friend. A basic knowledge of this process is imperative. Having an outside view of your ongoing situation is an absolute must to help you accomplish your goals.

Money and your heart.

There is a lot more to this. Yes, it is okay to follow your best instincts. However, don’t wear your heart on your shoulders. Be careful and remember that most men who search overseas are often very naive. This can play into the hands of someone who just wants your money and not your heart. You should always be a little suspicious of anyone who wants your money for any reason. Just be careful not to be overly suspicious without reason.

A Few Insights for Bobby

A Few Insights for Bobby… Billgreen54

A few insights for Bobby was updated late 2016. It is full of information regarding dating web sites and how they work. I receive dozens of letters weekly from men all over the world. They often ask the same questions regarding websites and how to find a real Ukrainian woman. The sad part is, most men who search in Ukraine from other countries make the same mistakes over and over. Most men fail to create an honest relationship with a Ukrainian woman.

Honest Loving Relationship.

It’s impossible for me to advise every man who contacts me with the same answers. Every man has a unique set of circumstances. For a man who has just started to communicate with ladies in Ukraine, I can offer insights that come from my own experiences. I share my thoughts and the experiences of thousands of other men searching for the same thing. A real honest loving relationship. A few insights for Bobby has great information and advice.

Educate Yourself and Learn.

If you are new to International dating or, if you have come to Ukraine to meet a real woman more than twice and failed: Take a step back. Educate yourself and learn what you need to know about finding the woman of your dreams.

The letter below was originally sent to me by Bobby on May 4, 2013. Enjoy!

I am glad I read the blog entry Jon (Joninfla) started on his page regarding his visit to Nikolaev.

A Few Insights for Bobby.

Jon is a great guy. We were glad to have met him eight years ago in early 2008. He is married and quite happy. Since helping Jon, Larisa and I have helped hundreds personally and thousands on-line better understand this process from start to finish. Here are my thoughts regarding marriage agencies, web sites and more.

Girls get paid.

Anas…. provides a website for Ukrainian marriage agencies to use as a marketing tool. The girls that work at agencies are paid a salary. The men and women who write letters are paid by the letter. Girls that chat with men are paid to chat. For ninety nine percent of the women found on Anas…, it’s nothing more than a job. Most are either married, in serious relationships, or use the money to support themselves.

It is Just a Job.

Most Ukrainian women never have the desire to meet a man she is communicating with on an International dating website. They get paid to chat and write letters. Most of the women that are forced by the agency to meet a man from another country, find it disgusting and a waste of time. While there may be a serious lady or two, most do it for a job. I hope you find answers to your questions with a few insights for Bobby.

Ladies are Well Trained.

The First Meeting. This is a Must Read!

They Never Come Back.

Most men who actually come to Ukraine to meet a woman, fail to create a real relationship. They never come back. They fail to educate themselves and usually do very stupid things. Men often make demands of a woman expecting her to do whatever he tells her to do. Not smart!

Capture Her Heart.

Education is the key to finding a real woman here. Educate yourself, and you stand a great chance of finding a real woman. There are countless women in Ukraine that would consider a loving relationship with a man from any country. You just have to know how to capture her heart. It’s much different than you think. There are many more thoughts than a few insights for Bobby, this article has just a few.

Bill and Larisa First Met Ten Tears Ago…

Honesty and Sincerity.

There are a number of ways to determine the honesty and sincerity of a woman on Anas……. Actually, it’s not difficult at all. A few simple questions and a couple of weeks. The first key to finding a serious Ukrainian woman, is to determine her honesty and sincerity. Simple questions like “Did you study a foreign language at school?” Most will tell you “No”. This is so she can get you to pay for English lessons. Of course, they never take the English lessons; they take the cash.
